Tax season is in full swing, and so are the scammers. Scammers pretend to be official IRS representatives in an attempt to steal your identity and money.

Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and avoid becoming a victim of tax identity theft and fraud.

	Make contact by phone, email or text.
	Ask for payment over the phone.
	Make threats of lawsuits or arrests.

	Call, email or text to request personal information.
	Require specific payment methods like wires or prepaid debit cards.

How to Protect Yourself

Do not provide any personal information over the phone.

 

Write down the number and name of caller, and then hang up.

Do not respond to emails claiming to be from the IRS.

 

Report the call to the IRS and FTC at identytheft.gov.

If filing taxes by mail, send your return directly from the post office.

 

Warn family and friends that these calls are scams.
