Here at Embassy Bank, we understand that unexpected overdrafts can occasionally happen. The following information is being provided to assist you with understanding overdrafts, the fees associated with them, and the options we’ve made available to help cover these transactions when they occur.
An “Overdraft” occurs when there are not enough funds available in your account to pay for a transaction and we pay (or cover) the transaction as a courtesy for you.
An “NSF Return Item” occurs when you don’t have enough money in your account to pay for a transaction and we decline the transaction by returning it unpaid. NSF stands for “NonSufficient Funds”.
In either situation, we may charge you a fee.
A Representment occurs when we return an item unpaid, and the merchant or payee later resubmits that same item for payment. If this occurs and your account does not have sufficient funds to pay the item, you may be charged additional fees. Representment charges do not apply to personal accounts.
Embassy’s Overdraft Protection is an optional service which allows you to link your checking account to another eligible Embassy account. When a transaction posts which exceeds the available balance in your checking account, funds are automatically swept from your linked backup account(s). This can help you avoid declined transactions, returned checks, and overdrafts. If you are enrolled, and if you have sufficient funds available in your linked account to cover the overdraft, you will not be charged a fee. Eligible backup accounts are accounts on which you are an authorized signer and can include other Embassy checking accounts, savings accounts, overdraft lines of credit and home equity lines of credit.
If you overdraw your account, at the end of that business day we’ll automatically transfer funds from your linked backup account or Line of Credit.
For linked deposit (checking or savings) accounts: If the available balance in your linked deposit account is $100 or more and can cover the overdraft, we’ll transfer funds in $100 increments to cover the overdraft. If the available balance in your linked deposit account is less than either $100 or the amount needed, we’ll transfer the available balance.
Example 1: If you overdraw your checking account by $130 and your linked savings account’s available balance is $300, we’ll transfer $200 from your savings to your checking. You would then have $70 in your checking account after the transaction has been paid and $100 remaining in your savings account.
Example 2: If you overdraw your checking account by $100 and your linked savings account’s available balance is $25, we’ll transfer $25 from your savings to your checking, however your checking account may still be overdrawn by $75 and you may still be subject to a fee.
For a linked Overdraft Line of Credit (ODLOC): If the available credit in your ODLOC is $100 or more and can cover the overdraft, we’ll advance $100 initially, then in $50 increments to cover the overdraft. If the available credit in your ODLOC is less than either $100 or the amount needed, we’ll advance the available credit.
Example 3: If you overdraw your checking account by $75 and your linked ODLOC’s available credit is $200, we’ll advance $100 on your OLOC and transfer it to your checking account. You would then have $25 in your checking account after the transaction has been paid and $100 available credit remaining on your ODLOC.
Example 4: If you overdraw your checking account by $300 and your linked ODLOC’s available credit is $100, we’ll advance $100 on your ODLOC and transfer it to your checking account, however your checking account may still be overdrawn by $200 and you may still be subject to a fee.
For a linked Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC): If the available credit in your HELOC is $250 or more and can cover the overdraft, we’ll advance $250 initially, then in $50 increments to cover the overdraft. If the available credit in your HELOC is less than either $250 or the amount needed, we’ll advance the available credit.
Example 5: If you overdraw your checking account by $280 and your linked HELOC’s available credit is $500, we’ll advance $300 on your HELOC and transfer it to your checking account. You would then have $20 in your checking account after the transaction has been paid and $200 available credit remaining on your HELOC.
Example 6: If you overdraw your checking account by $300 and your linked HELOC’s available credit is $100, we’ll advance $100 on your HELOC and transfer it to your checking account, however your checking account may still be overdrawn by $200 and you may still be subject to a fee.
Yes, if there aren’t enough available funds in your checking account or linked backup account to cover an item, we’ll either pay it for you and overdraw your account, or we’ll decline the transaction and return the item. If we pay an item for you and overdraw your account, you may be charged an Overdraft fee. If we return an item unpaid due to non-sufficient funds, you may be charged an NSF Return Item fee.
There is no cost to set up Overdraft Protection. There are no transfer fees when you use Overdraft Protection; however, advances from a Line of Credit will accrue interest from the date each advance is made.
